Genesis & Growth

The origins of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Ltd. trace back to 1921, when it was founded as The Nadar Bank Ltd. in Tuticorin under the visionary leadership of the Nadar business community.

Registered on May 11, 1921, and inaugurated on November 11, 1921, the bank began its journey with Shri M.V. Shanmugavel Nadar as Chairman, laying the foundation for a legacy built on trust, integrity, and service to the community

From just four branches in 1947 across Tuticorin, Madurai, Sivakasi, and Virudhunagar, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank has grown into a nationwide network of 594 fully computerized and interconnected branches.

Over the decades, the bank has marked several milestones — opening its first branch outside Tamil Nadu in Bengaluru (1976), launching its first computerized branch in Tuticorin (1984), and establishing its first currency chest in Madurai (1993).
